The Metuchen Meetinghouse was constructed in 1777 by the First Presbyterian Church of Woodbridge. During the Revolutionary War, General Stirling used the meetinghouse as his headquarters. British Generals Howe and Cornwallis had a 17,000 soldiers formed in two arms of a pincer, in an attempt to trap Washington's army in between. Lord Stirling had 3000 troops in and around Metuchen, while he was headquartered at the meetinghouse. A Metuchen skirmish on June 26, 1777 resulted in delaying the advancing British force, allowing Washington's army to escape to the Watchung Mountains. [1]

A  1934 plaque in front of the Cemetery pays tribute to the "Thirty-One Revolutionary War Soldiers buried here". [2]  However later research revealed that a total of 63 men are buried here who were either soldiers, fifers, doctors or patriots. A 1983 plaque at the cemetery lists the following information about these men. (Research by Nora C. Sutton) [3]
